🦾 Will a robot take your job?

Hello, Joe here. New year, new AI tools. (That’s a saying, right?) Now that we are all back at our desks and ready to take on 2023, I wanted to discuss the elephant in the room: Is a robot going to take your job?

The good news? Not exactly. But robots will make our tasks more efficient, letting us focus more on bigger-picture strategies.

What if I told you a robot wrote this newsletter, would you believe me?

Ok, I didn’t use AI to write this entire newsletter, but I did use AI for a few aspects. For example, I asked a tool I am quite fond of, ChatGPT, the below question, and I must say, I really like the answer.

Joe: “What is Government Technology?”

ChatGPT: “Government technology, also known as “govtech,” refers to the use of technology to improve and enhance government services, operations, and decision-making.

This can include a wide range of technologies, such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, as well as more specialized technologies like blockchain and biometric identification systems.

Govtech has the potential to greatly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations, as well as improve the delivery of services to citizens.For example, the use of data analytics can help governments better understand the needs and preferences of their constituents, while artificial intelligence can help automate and streamline administrative tasks…

Incredible, right?

Breaking Down AI Concerns:

Should we be worried? There is a novelty aspect to AI. It’s new, exciting and blowing up the internet. But what does it mean?

The short answer: We shouldn’t necessarily worry, but we should proceed with caution.

What to be careful about when using these tools

• Sourcing
  • ChatGPT seamlessly stitches together responses to prompts and can answer endless questions. One concern is that the data is not sourced, so it’s impossible to fact check it. This can further contribute to misinformation spreading online.
• Potential Bias
  • Look out for bias when using AI tools. Our research has hit on this for several years –concerns over the use of facial recognition to broader use of AI in verticals like criminal justice. For these tools to be considered more broadly, further transparency will be required.
• Impact on Writing and Teaching
  • What makes the ChatGPT tool fascinating is how well it writes and how human the responses are. Tools like this can easily disrupt industries including teaching, learning, creative writing, business communication and more. Looking ahead, we’re going to want to explore the guardrails needed to determine when and when not to use these tools.

The Benefits of AI:

AI tools are like Google on steroids: They scan the internet to give you instant results and they are extremely intelligent.

Think about the time employees will save by using AI tools to make creative content, cure writer’s block and find answers to questions like:

Joe: “How can AI Benefit Government?”

ChatGPT: “Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to bring significant benefits to government, including increased efficiency, improved decision-making, and enhanced service delivery. Some specific examples of how AI could benefit government include:

1. Streamlining processes: AI can be used to automate tasks such as data entry, analysis, and processing, freeing up government employees to focus on more complex and value-added tasks. This can lead to increased efficiency and productivity within the government.
2. Improving decision-making: AI algorithms can analyze large amounts of data and provide insights and recommendations for decision-makers. This can help governments make more informed and accurate decisions, leading to better outcomes for citizens.
3. Enhancing service delivery: AI can be used to improve the delivery of government services to citizens. For example, chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI can provide quick and convenient access to information and assistance.

Overall, the benefits of AI for government depend on how it is implemented and used. It has the potential to improve efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery, but it is important for governments to carefully consider the potential impacts and to ensure that appropriate policies are in place to support a smooth transition.

I am excited about AI and the technologies that we haven’t even touched yet. Just think: If we have access to tools like ChatGPT (for free), imagine the tools we haven’t even discovered yet.
